Maxilla

Maxilla Edmonton

The maxilla, also called the upper jawbone, is a crucial part of the facial skeleton and oral anatomy. It forms the upper jaw, holds your upper teeth, and makes up the front portion of the roof of your mouth (palate). The maxilla develops from two separate bones that fuse together during growth, creating a single, strong bone. The area where the two bones join is called the intermaxillary suture.

Before this fusion, the maxilla exists as two bones in fetal development, but after growth, it functions as one bone. The maxilla is a key part of the viscerocranium, which is the portion of the skull that supports the face and oral structures.

The mandible, or lower jaw, is different but related. It also forms from two bones that fuse at the mandibular symphysis. Unlike the maxilla, the mandible is usually treated as a single bone in adults, forming the lower jaw that supports your lower teeth.

Why the Maxilla Matters in Dentistry

The maxilla supports your upper teeth, helps shape your bite, and contributes to proper speech and chewing. Understanding the maxilla?s anatomy is important for:

  • Orthodontic treatment and teeth alignment
  • Dental implants and restorative procedures
  • Evaluating jaw health and facial structure
  • Diagnosis and treatment of injuries or deformities
